Maxim's 300 Movies You MUST See Before You Die

I cancelled my subscription to Maxim Magazine some time ago, but have still been receiving copies in the mail for the last few months for whatever reason. I stopped subscribing to Maxim for the same reason that, in the past few years, I have also stopped subscribing to Wizard, Toyfare, PSM, Electronic Gaming Monthly, and AP Magazine. That reason being that I'd rather read my news online than in a stack of subscription card spewing periodicals which inevitably end up in unread piles around my room. When I picked up the latest Maxim (#125) to see who the babe on the cover was this month (Elisha Cuthbert, by the way), a headline caught my eye that I couldn't refuse: "The 300 Movies To See Before You Die".

Spend five minutes looking up movies on Google and you'll stumble upon dozens of lists just like this one which merely present the opinions of whoever crafted them. As a matter of fact, I've masterminded a few of them myself right here on this blog and will probably do so again before everything is said and done. There are no real reasons for these lists to exist other than to spark conversation and debate, but I tend to find them irresistible. After all, if you have a blog you must have opinions, and if you have opinions, you most likely take great enjoyment in observing those of other people and comparing them to your own. So here I present Maxim's list, much of which I disagree with, for all to see and critique.

Also, for shits and giggles, all of the films which appear in BLUE are those which I have personally seen as of the original date of this post (April 17, 2008). All films appearing in ORANGE are those which I have caught up with after the original date of this post. If anyone reading this feels like counting out how many of the films named here they've seen, let me know your count via the comments section at the bottom of this post. I'd love to see how others' viewing experiences stack up.

Number of Maxim's 300 movies that I have seen (as of April 17, 2008): 175

Number of Maxim's 300 movies that I have seen (as of August 23, 2009): 204

Number of Maxim's 300 movies that my mother has seen (as of April 17, 2008): 82

***Note: While it sounds nice to round down to 300, by my count there were in fact 317 titles on Maxim's list. However, six of these films were mentioned in more than one category, so I've omitted the doubles, leaving a total of 311 individual films recognized on the above list.

***Edit: As of May 27, 2008 it has been brought to my attention that I somehow neglected to include A Clockwork Orange on the above list. The list has been altered along with the final film count. In addition to this change, I have also begun marking the films which I've seen for the first time after the original post date (April 17, 2008) and keeping track of my current "watched" count near the bottom of the list, which I'll update whenever I think about it.

I beat you by one. I've seen ONE MORE MOVIE on this list than you have. That's ridiculous.

What I found really interesting is that a good portion of the movies you have not seen are ones I have and have really enjoyed them.

As much as I don't want to give you some recommendations because I tend to dislike your opinions, I will actually throw you some bones, because everyone is entitled to their opinion (it doesn't mean your opinions are EVER right, you're just entitled to them is all, and a sick part of me does want you to talk poorly of something I see value in, so I can torment via the internet and occasionally in person).

First off- See the old ones. It's where everything you watch comes from. It's really just a

ENTER THE DRAGON?! Shame on you, Rian.

THERE WILL BE BLOOD was great, btw.

Blue Velvet? Always watch David Lynch films. No Questions.

Interesting crime flicks that bring something to the table:
Bad Lieutenant
SEXY BEAST
Donnie Brasco
Carlito's Way (DePalma does some nice shots)

Mean Streets (I'm assuming it's on your netflix cue, because it's scorsese. see this film pronto)

Boyz N the Hood (just bite the bullet and watch black people act for once) While you're at it rent every stand-up performance by Richard Pryor

Crazy. this post is super-long.
I'm interested to see just how much I'm going to hate and disagree with your opinions on Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

PEACE!

Thanks for dropping your viewed list and recommendations, Karl. I was really hoping someone would join me here as this kind of list makes for good discussion.

There are a good number of movies here that I've seen parts of, but if I didn't feel like I could say that I've "watched" them, I left them black rather than blue. For example:

The Great Escape - I've seen the last half of this movie or so. I have it in my possession, but have been putting it off since I only need to see the first half.

Lawrence of Arabia - Alec Stevens showed us this movie during a class period at the Kubert School. I was only halfway paying attention because I was working on an assignment.

Seven Samurai - Again, I've seen a good portion of this movie and have just been putting it off because I've probably seen about half of it.

The Nightmare on Elm Street - I've seen the end of this movie more than once, but have never watched it from the beginning.

In the case of almost all of these movies, they're already on my Netflix queue, and have been for months. I'll make a point to to bump some of your recommendations up to the top of the list for future episodes of the podcast.

Speaking of Sidetracked, Jesse and I have recorded episode 22 and I'll be editing it today. You'll get to hear our discussion of Ferris Bueller's Day Off, as well as a reason/excuse as to why I haven't seen Enter The Dragon yet. Don't worry though, I plan to.

First off you douche holes missed Serenity and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. It would be more forgivable if you had not put Starshit Troopers.

I also did not see V for Vendetta anywhere and that is a must own movie.

Jake - Perhaps if you'd actually read the post you'd have realized that Maxim Magazine came up with this list, not me. If you feel the need to post here again, please use a little more tact next time. If you want to continue to keep the stereotype of moronic assholes hiding behind the anonymity of the internet while posting childish bullshit responses on serious blogs, feel free to take your business elsewhere.

Wow, you rock my socks, I was just trying to make the list from the website, and it was hurting my head why there wasn't 300 (I had forgotten that websites are jerks and never post the full list)

I haven't seen a pile of these, but would like to attempt to work my way through it!

InDesignKat said...

Leon (The Professional in the US) should be on any list like this. Nice to see True Romance on there, though. Great movie. I've seen 150 of these.

One question... Face/Off? Seriously?!?

Rian said...

indesignkat - I thought the same thing when I saw that Face/Off was on the list. Then again, the list did come from Maxim Magazine. I mean, they have an entire section devoted to nude scenes, so you can't put a whole lot of stock in the list. There are a number of films listed that I disagree with and several that I feel were neglected (such as John Carpenter's The Thing).
